LIGHTNING PROTECTION SYSTEMS (LPS)

The function of an external lightning protection system is to intercept, conduct and disperse a lightning strike safely to earth. Without such a system a building's structure, electronic systems and the people working around or within it are all at risk.

Lightning flashes to structures can be hazardous to people, as well as to the structures themselves, their contents and installations. The possible types of damage are injuries to living beings due to step and touch voltage; physical damage (fire, explosion and mechanical destruction) due to lightning current effects; and failure of internal systems due to lightning electromagnetic impulse (LEMP). This is why the application of lightning protection measures is essential. The need for protection, the economic benefits of installing protection measures and the selection of adequate protection measures should be determined in terms of risk management. Even though a lightning discharge is of a very short duration,200 microseconds, it is a very real cause of damage and destruction. A direct hit, if not starting a fire, causing physical damage, will probably blow most, or all of your electronic equipment in the vicinity - easily up to 100 meters away from the actual hit!

A reliable LPS must include structural lightning protection and transient overvoltage (electric systems) protection. We need to ensure complete protection of your employees, the fabric of your building, the electronic systems therein and to then be able to be insured with peace of mind.

During the annual maintenance testing and compliance verification process, we use different types of testing methods, relating to Lightning Protection and Earthing. Part of the survey includes the visual inspection of the various systems installed. This is done to ensure there aren’t any adverse changes in soil and structural conditions.

Part of the required structural surveys, and existing system conditions, is to ensure adequate hardware is still in place. Only approved components to be used according to SANS codes of practice.

The local Ground Flash Density(GFD) as measured and calculated by the CSIR and Weather Bureau must also be considered. Weather conditions changed dramatically over the last decade, and has substantially impacted the GFD in certain areas. This is a critical aspect in the risk assessment process that has a set impact on risk, and the level of protection required. Once the above is taken into consideration we mitigate the possibility of Step and Touch potential by ensuring adequate system compliance is uphold. If found, deviations forms part of the maintenance repair process.

The final step to ensure proper protection to the system is the Electronic Lightning and Surge Protection Device(SPD) phase. And equipotential bonding.  This is mainly focused, but not limited to Main Distribution Boards, as well as Sub DB's.

The major effects of a direct strike include building damages, trees blown apart, personal injuries and even death. The secondary effects of lightning - the short duration, high voltage spikes called transient over voltages causes equally catastrophic, damage to the electronic systems in buildings.  This has large financial economic impacts if not mitigated.


The following equipment gets negatively affected when SPD’s and equipotential does not forming part of a complete solution:

Lightning damage accounts for about 65% of all over-voltage damage to Electrical Distribution networks in South Africa. Lightning does NOT always strike the highest point. A Fatal incident occurred on a schools rugby field, where a pupil was directly hit by lightning, very close to the rugby posts.
